A Visit to Amber Palace, Jaipur

Amber Palace or Amer Fort is one of the prime tourist places in Jaipur which is located in Amer, Rajasthan and is around 12 Kms from Jaipur. It was built by Meenas and later ruled by Raja Man Singh. The Amer Fort consists of Diwan-e-Aam (Hall of Public Audience),  Diwan-e-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), Sheesh Mahal and Sukh Niwas.

The fort situated next to Maota lake and it stands on a Hill called Cheel ka Teela i.e. Hill of Eagles which gives a birds-eye view of Jaipur. I have visited Hawa Mahal and Amber Palace on the same day as I had limited time. From Hawa Mahal, I have started around 2 P.M. and took a bus Bari Chaupar. Though there is a lot of transport available in Badi Chaupar which will take you to the Amber Fort, the bus is the cheapest option. It will take around 45 minutes to reach Amber Fort from Badi Chaupar.

Did you Know: The song ‘Mohe Rang do Lal’ of Bajirao Mastani was shot at the Amber Palace.

If you are visiting Amber Palace and wanted to know more about heritage and fort, I will suggest you hire a guide. The guides are experts in the historical significance of the places you will see inside the forts. As you will go inside the fort, you will see the places:

1. Ganesh Pol – The main entrance of the fort. Overall Amber Fort has 4 major entrances but Ganesh Pol was the main entrance. In Hindu Culture, Lord Ganesh is known to remove all obstacles and is a symbol of new beginnings and you will see a lot of Indian Homes have Ganesh Idol in front of the House. There are small windows above the gate which is called Suhag Mandir, from this window Royal Ladies followed the royal proceedings as they were not allowed in the public.

3. Jai Mandir – The Jai Mandir is a beautiful building with glass and mirror work. The Jai Mandir is divided into three parts, Diwan-e-Khas or Hall of Private Audience, Jas Mandir used for relaxation and Sheesh Mahal also known as Mirror Palace. It is said that at night when the candlelights were lit, infinite reflections of the light were created in these tiny glasses which magnifies the effect of light several times.

4. Zeenana Mahal and Bardari Mandir – The Bardari or pavilion is used by Maharanis as the meeting point. The whole area surrounded is known as Zeenana Mahal where the Raja and Maharani’s used to stay. There

The Amer Fort is so big that you need at least 3-4 hours to fully view all the parts. Since I do not have enough time, I could only see some parts but will surely visit next time to visit it fully.
